Blog 1 - Why Water and Politics and why North Africa ?

Dear reader,

Welcome to my blog on Water and Politics in North Africa. This blog is part of a module called ’Water and Development in Africa’ which I am taking as part of final year at UCL.

Morocco’s dam on the lake Bin el Ouidane

The future posts will focus on the impact of the exiting water stress on the political dynamics in countries of North Africa. We will examine the current water context of each country; the political and social causes such as bas governance and infrastructure, mismanagement of the water resources; the inevitable consequences that arise such as social protests and transboundary conflict; and how governments are addressing these issues?

Each topic will be based on peer reviewed literature, government and international organizations reports and local and international media’s coverage.

Coming from and growing in Morocco, I was always passionate about the complex dynamics of the region. I believe that it is especially true for the case of North Africa that the current urgent water crisis has roots in bad governance and lacks policies or control on national water use. I am looking forward to the discoveries made in this blog and I hope you will enjoy it! Don’t hesitate to comment and share your thoughts!

See you soon for the next post,

Kenza
